General Information About Vancouver Island
460 km long with a width of 80 km, Vancouver Island is the 43rd largest island in the world, the 11th largest island in Canada and the second most populated island of the country (after the river island of Montreal). It is separated from the mainland to the east by a succession of straits, from west to east, the Strait and Queen Charlotte, the very narrow Johnstone Strait, the Strait of Georgia, large body of water that houses landward city of Vancouver and in the south, overlooking the ocean, the Strait of Juan de Fuca, which separates the island from the U.S. state of Washington. The West Island is open to the Pacific.
The west coast has an exceptional rainfall and is home to an impressive temperate rain forest.
In 2002 the estimated population of 750,000 inhabitants, almost half live in Greater Victoria in the south of the island which is also the provincial capital of British Columbia. Other cities include Nanaimo, Port Alberni, Parksville, Courtenay and Campbell River.
A British naval base at Esquimalt was established in 1865, and was subsequently given to Canadians. This is the naval base in the Pacific Ocean from the Royal Canadian Navy and its second largest base after Halifax, Nova Scotia.
On its southwestern coast, the Coast Trail West is a trail of 75 km in length, across the allowance for Pacific Rim National Park.
